The Horizon Village residence hall at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh houses a combination of 350 suite-style and traditional-plus units, configured in a five-story building. Additional apartments accommodate residence hall staff. One and two story lounges are located at the ends and center of each floor, near the elevators. Main floor spaces include: meeting rooms, a computer lab, study spaces and a recreation area.
The north-south orientation brings direct daylight into each unit for several hours a day. Each unit has a large bay window in the living space, with varying types of glass for optimum light and restricted solar gain. The project features several other sustainable design elements, including green roofs and a geothermal well field under the semi-circular recreation lawn. The integration of technologically sound masonry detailing with building systems efficiency was designed to provide Horizon Village with an energy consumption rate almost 50% lower than a typical code-compliant building.
